Hi there

I hope you are well and looking after yourselves? As you may know, supporting women struggling with mental health issues, is something I am passionate about. Thankfully, World Mental Health Day is tomorrow, October 10th, so it’s a great time to raise awareness of mental health issues.  It can act as a stepping stone to encourage people to seek help if they need it. So how can Massage benefit Women’s Mental Health and Wellbeing? Read on to find out more.

For instance, mental health is just as important as physical health. However, it is often overlooked or stigmatised. Moreover, it is important to remember that everyone experiences mental health challenges from time to time. There is no shame in seeking help and there are many things you can do to improve your mental wellbeing.

One way to improve your mental wellbeing is by having a massage. Massage therapy is a complementary therapy that involves the manipulation of soft tissues in the body. We know how it can be used to treat a variety of physical conditions, such as pain, muscle tension, and headaches. However, massage therapy can also have a number of benefits for mental health.

Here are some of the ways that massage therapy can help improve your mental wellbeing:

  • Reduces stress and anxiety: Massage therapy can help to reduce stress and anxiety by releasing endorphins, which are hormones that have mood-boosting effects. Massage therapy can also help to relax muscles and reduce tension, which can lead to a calmer and more relaxed state of mind.
  • Improves mood: Massage therapy can help to improve mood by increasing levels of serotonin and dopamine, which are neurotransmitters that play a role in mood regulation. Massage therapy can also help to reduce levels of cortisol, which is a stress hormone that can contribute to mood swings.
  • Promotes relaxation: Massage therapy can help to promote relaxation by calming the nervous system and reducing muscle tension. This can lead to a better sense of peace and well-being
  • Boosts self-esteem: Massage therapy can help to boost self-esteem by providing a sense of pampering and care. It can also help to improve body image and reduce self-consciousness.

Research findings on the connection between massage therapy and mental health

A number of research studies have demonstrated the connection between massage therapy and mental health. For example, a study published in the journal “Complementary Therapies in Medicine” found that massage therapy was effective in reducing anxiety and depression in people with chronic pain. Another study, published in the journal “Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics,” found that massage therapy was effective in reducing stress and improving mood in people with cancer.
